Fungal Nails (Onychomycosis)
Onychomycosis is a common condition affecting the toe nails of adults. It is rarely seen in children but is common in older people.
Fungal nail infection typically occurs as a consequence of a skin fungal infection (ie, Athlete's Foot) & particularly if the fungal nail has been previously damaged.
The nail will typically become thickened and discoloured to some extent. Although generally painless, the nails can be very difficult to cut. It may seem to be little more than a cosmetic problem but various studies have shown that sufferes report embarrassment and difficulty with basic nail care.
Diagnosis & Treatment
Confirmation of nail fungus is usually via laboratory testing of nail clippings. The Podiatrist will remove areas of the fungal nail and material, and arrange for it to be analysed. This is painless.
Depending on the level of infection Antifungal paints or oral medication may be recommended. Toe nails grow about 1mm a month, so the nail could take 12 months to grow out.
