Ingrowing Toe Nails

How is an Ingrowing Toe Nail caused?

There are several reasons that an lead to an ingrown toe nail - the principle causes are:

  • Nail cutting technique which leads to a spike of nail being overlooked on the leading edge which may then drive into the toe and cause inflammation and pain.
  • An excessively curved/involuted nail which is difficult to cut.
  • Walking problems that force the soft tissue againt the nail.

What can be done?

If you have been suffering from this problem for some time you will know how much an ingrowing toe nail can affect your every day life, your choice of activities and your choice of footwear.

The successful treatment of choice is known as the "nail wedge resection".  This, you will be happy to know is carried out after your toe has been anaesthetised!!

A narrow rectangle of nail is removed on one or both sides of the nail dependant on the problem, and then the area is treated to prevent that section of nail regrowing again.  The end result is cosmetically very acceptable and permanent.
